It may be hard to find a more absurdly idyllic and picture-perfect island paradise destination than can be found in Cook Islands holidays. Often hailed as the best-kept secret in the South Pacific, these 15 enchanting islands are a castaway’s dream, scattered across 850,000 square miles of ocean between Tonga to the West and French Polynsesia to the East.

Spanning an area the size of India but with a population of just 11,400, the islands are split into two groups; the less populated north, and the more visited and settled south.

The islands are ‘high’ islands of volcanic origin, most of the north is made up of atolls, (sunken volcanoes) topped with vibrant and magnificent coral reefs.

If you’re looking for a relaxing and peaceful hideaway in some of the world’s most beautiful unspoilt islands, look no further than a holiday to the Cook Islands.

Rarotonga
The youngest and largest of the 15 Cook Islands, Rarotonga is the nation’s capital, spanning a 20mile circumference. The eroded remains of a once mighty volcano is now enveloped in lush, tropical jungle, with cascading streams down wandering valleys. Pristine turquoise waters lap the pure white sands and a laid back, friendly island people welcome you with open arms to their paradise home.

Just inside the tropic of Capricorn, Rarotonga enjoys an all year round tropical climate, with temperatures rarely dipping below 18 degrees Celsius in the winter. The summer months (November to April), reach highs of 29 degrees Celsius on average, making the island an ideal retreat any time of the year.

Its central mountainous region is unpopulated and a cloud forest engulfs its highest parts – you can explore inland on foot, enjoying one of the guided cross-island walks, or a three-hour four wheel drive tour will take you through the mountains and up into the rainforests.

Entertainment on the island can be found in the way of traditional Polynesian drumming, dancing and cabaret, often while you sample the local cuisine, which is predominantly locally caught seafood.

Recent over-fishing has declined around the bays and there is once again plenty of beautiful fish and coral reef to marvel at from beneath the pristine waters while snorkelling. The inner-village market is open every day except Sunday serving up tasty local food, drink, handmade crafts and entertainment from local singers. On Friday nights hot food is served, and very well recommended by islanders.

To get around the island there is a bus service which operates in both a clockwise and anticlockwise direction, or you could hire a bicycle, moped or car to see the sights. Many hotels will have bicycles and mopeds for hire and it’s best to book once you are there so you can find the best deal and not be tied down to a schedule.

Aitutaki
The second most-visited and the crown jewel of the Cook Islands, Aitutaki is often hailed as the blue lagoon of the Pacific, and is a world famous atoll – rising 4000 metres from the ocean floor. Comprised of three volcanic and 12 coral islets (motu) uninhabited by anyone, Aitutaki is often visited by couples and honeymooners looking for a romantic retreat, or daytrippers flying in from the capital Rarotonga.

Flights from Rarotonga run daily and take approximately 50 minutes, allowing you to take in the view from high in the clouds. No trip to Aitutaki is complete without a lagoon cruise to the tiny motu dotted around the island – the most popular visited are Tapuatae, Akaimi and One Foot Island, where you can snorkel to your heart’s content.

The markets in the main village of Aratunga sell food, drink, carved artefacts and other locally produced wares, and other entertainment such as traditional Polynesian performance and dance take place weekly on the resorts.

Both Rarotonga and Aitutaki are lucky enough to not be overwhelmed by commercialism from regular flocks of visitors to the islands, and retain their unspoilt, untouched charm well, making Cook Islands holidays a truly iconic and heavenly relaxing break.
