Scattered across 230,000 square kilometres of the South Pacific, northwest of New Caledonia and northeast of Tonga, you’ll find the 330 enchanting islands that make up Fiji. As with other neighbouring island nations, most of Fiji’s islands are a result of volcanic activity that started around 150million years ago, so their rugged terrains are deep with lush jungles, beautiful jagged mountains and miles of coral reef coastline.

Holidays to Fiji can offer so much more than hundreds of miles of pristine beaches, swaying palms and crystal clear turquoise waters. The vibrant cities on the two main islands Viti Levu and Vanua Levu offer a myriad of shopping destinations, exclusive restaurants serving up delicious local cuisine, and several interesting sights to see.

Fiji holidays uncover a world of many cultures, an exclusive island-hopping paradise and exciting blend of Melanesian, Polynesian, Indian, Chinese and European cultures. With year-round tropical weather and an abundence of forest, mineral and fish resources, the Fijian islands are among the most developed economies in the Pacific island realm.

Viti Levu

Suva Suva, Fiji’s capital city is nestled into the heart of a relaxed harbour, at the southeastern end of Viti Levu and is the nation’s major port and largest city. Its downtown streets are lined with a bustling jigsaw of colonial buildings; busy shopping courts, and an abundance of eateries and bars. Small passageways lead you down the city’s Indian-influenced areas, with numerous curry houses, sari shops and markets begging to be browsed.

Speaking of markets, Suva is home to the country’s largest market (and probably the largest retail market in the South Pacific), located just off the main wharf and next to the city’s bus station. A throbbing epicentre of sights, smells and sounds of the real Fiji, offering locally produced fruits, vegetables and crops, seafood and spices, as well as various crafts, textiles and bric-a-brac from local vendors. Always busiest on Friday afternoons and joyfully chaotic during rush-hour, a visit to Suva is not complete without a visit to its famous market.

Lautoka
Fiji’s second largest city is a tranquil and calm city, epitomising the laid back and relaxed Fijian ambience that seeps through the pores of the nation, despite some of its other cities being so busy with activity. Lautoka’s wide streets are lush with trees and plants, and the city lies against the impressive backdrop of the Koroyanitu mountains. Head down to the waterfront and you’ll find boats, yachts and cruiseships lazily hanging unobtrusively offshore.

Nadi The gateway to Fiji for many of its international visitors, a 20-minute drive from Nadi International Airport lands you in downtown Nadi, Fiji’s third largest city. Often overlooked as a place to visit in its own right and mainly used as a gateway en route to Denarau Island or other destinations across the country, Nadi’s dusty downtown is where you can find its markets, shopping malls and eateries, and at the south end of the city’s main street you’ll find its elaborately painted Swami Temple.

Malolo and Tokoriki Islands
If you’re looking for an idyllic island hideaway for your Fiji holiday, then look no further to the beautiful and unspoilt Malolo and Tokoriki Islands. Part of the Mamanuca Islands, a group of volcanic archipelago 25km to the west of Nadi, these two island paradises encapsulate everything there is about a relaxing and peaceful island holiday. Their golden shores are adorned with a myriad of mesmerising coral reefs, swaying coconut palms and fringed with lush coastal forests for exploring.

These are small and secluded islands offering true relaxation and rejuvenation, with an abundance of waterbased activities such as snorkelling, diving, boating, scuba diving, turtle and dolphin watching, kayaking and swimming. When you’ve seen all there is to see around their shores head in land to trek through their lush rainforests and pretty villages.
