How long does it take to road trip Australia?

Are you ready for a break from the ordinary? Australia is waiting below the equator, spoiling to delight and excite you with cobalt ocean waters, sprawling cities, ancient canyons, and temperate rainforest hideaways. There’s more to the land of g’day mate than meets the eye.

How big is Australia, really?

The Land Down Under takes out two titles simultaneously, earning the accolade of largest island and smallest continent in a single geographical breath. Covering 7.7 million square kilometres – or thereabouts – circumnavigating the coastline alone without stops or sightseeing would take two weeks and a day.

It’s difficult to explain the distances between cities and major towns outside of hard numbers to anybody who’s used to driving a couple hours here and another few there to completely change their world for a day. Here are a few to get started:

  • Melbourne to Sydney: 13.5 hours (1,062km)
  • Sydney to Brisbane: 10.5 hours (922km)
  • Perth to Adelaide: 29 hours (2,696km)
  • Adelaide to Melbourne: 9 hours (738km)

There’s a lot of territory to cover on a single self-drive trip. Let’s get started on your great Australian driving holiday.

What to Do and Where to Go?

Australia is a big place, brimming with possibilities, potential routes and innumerable stop-overs, depending on your holiday speed. Wine and cheese lovers should consider the Barossa Valley, while wonder-seekers may find themselves completely enthralled by Kakadu National Park. You could explore the corners and trails of the Daintree or drive the Great Ocean Road, snapping pictures of the 12 Apostles.

Not sure where to start? Here are six self-drive itineraries to get your motor running.
