Day 1: Arrive in Auckland

Welcome to awesome Auckland. The northern capital glistens with intrepid potential, appealing to every speed of traveller from the avid shopper to the keen adventurer. Your hire car will be waiting to take you and your bags wherever you wish to go (although we recommend checking into your hotel first), making self-directed exploration easy.

Day 2: Delve into the City of Sails

After a comfortable first day of exploring, eating and sleeping, enjoy a structured tour of the gorgeous Auckland Harbour. You’ll be introduced to the city’s iconic skyline from a local perspective, highlighting iconic landmarks and the volcanic presence of Rangitoto Island, before passing under the Harbour Bridge and past Devonport’s naval base.

Day 3: Auckland to Rotorua via Waitomo, 330km (4 hrs 20 mins)

It’s time to bid a fond farewell to your first New Zealand stop and continue on, making your way south for a glittering experience under the earth. Treat your eyes to rolling hills and lush green valleys, as the Waikato region gives you a taste of life outside cosmopolitan New Zealand. Satisfy your stomach rumblings in Hamilton, grabbing a tasty bite before checking in for your next adventure. Stretch out the drive and get ready for a magical tour, as the Waitomo Caves open your curious soul to wonder, history and glittering worms, clinging to an unseen ceiling. After your tour wraps up, complete this route leg and check into your Rotorua accommodation.

Day 4: At Rotorua

Spend the day exploring the region, with plans and activities to suit all interests, before settling in for an evening of mouth-watering delights. Te Puia hosts the ever-popular Te Po Experience, combining cultural exposure with engaging entertainment. You’ll be welcome by a traditional powhiri before the feast, setting the tone for the night's events, including authentic Maori cuisine that can only be described as delicious, and an entrancing concert performance packed with traditional stories and songs. After dinner, you’ll be invited to board a people mover for an eye-popping journey through the geothermal valley, radiant in the evening light.

Day 5: Rotorua to Wellington, 460km (5 hrs 40 mins)

Put Rotorua in your rear-view and continue your journey south, making a few pit-stops along the way. It would be a shame to miss anything.

Day 6: Wonderful Wellington

Swap outside curiosities for inside information, as Te Papa educates, entertains, and tickles historical fancies faster than any cable channel. A 60-minute tour will take you into the interior of this evolving museum, broadening your understanding of how Maori/colonial relations and art relate. Displays and exhibitions document traditions, interpretations, expression, Pacific cultures, and natural history.

Day 7: Depart Wellington

Depending on your flight times, you may have the chance to grab breakfast on the harbour-front before returning your rental car to the airport depot. Arrive at the terminal for your flight home.
