Day 1: Arrive Christchurch

Welcome to the Garden City! Collect your bags and speed through customs to explore this laid-back slice of New Zealand. What will you do? The Christchurch Gondola is always an any-weather treat, boasting views of the soaring Southern Alps in the distance. If solid ground is more your speed, why not enjoy the Christchurch Rebuild Tour and witness how this spirited city continues to thrive despite recent catastrophes?
Stay: Rydges Latimer Christchurch

Day 2: Christchurch to Franz Josef, 395km (5 hrs 40 mins)

Today you’ll be driving through the New Zealand countryside watching as the Southern Alps undulate before your eyes, delivering ‘wow’-moments aplenty. You’ll be spoiled with sights of lush beech forests and the gorgeous Lake Brunner, after appreciating the lovely little alpine village of Arthur’s Pass – an awesome 737m above sea level. Finally, make your way into Franz Josef, the home of the mighty glacier.
Stay: Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier (incl breakfast)

Day 3: Franz Josef to Queenstown, 350km (4 hrs 30 mins)

Start your engine and navigate the wonders of Aotearoa until Queenstown comes into view. Leave early in the morning and reach the adrenaline capital around midday, giving you plenty of time for a Shotover Jet ride, operating from 8.00am until 6.00pm. Speaking of jet boats, this isn’t a jet experience quite like any other – the drivers are experienced, fearless, and hell-bent on making you scream with glee, making short work of narrow canyon passes, 360-degree spins, and a few surprising extras we won’t ruin here.
Hot Tip: Wear quick-dry clothes – you’re about to get white-water wet..
Stay: Rydges Queenstown (3 nights)

Day 4: At Queenstown

One way to begin your day is by standing on top of Queenstown, savouring the striking views from the summit of the Skyline Gondola*. Getting there is easy – we suggest leaving your car at home and catching public transport for a relaxed experience free of parking hassles. After you’ve made your way to the top and snapped hundreds of pictures in the process, why not add a zipline adventure* to your Queenstown experience and cruise the canopies of the surrounding forests? Then zoom to the bottom of the mountain on your included luge ride (or three – you can’t just do it once), satisfying any lunchtime cravings at the nearby café.
*Speak to our ANZCRO travel experts for more information about the Skyline Gondola or ziplining in Queenstown.

Day 5: At Queenstown

Are you a Lord of the Rings fan? Why not explore Middle Earth today by including a Safari of the Scenes Tour in your itinerary. This 4WD exploration will thrill, excite and delight, taking you into the heart of some of the most iconic locations, including Lothlorien, Isengard, and Ithilien -  and no, we won’t tell you any more than that. Breathtaking, spectacular, magical, wonderful and paradise have all been used to describe what you’re about to experience – check your camera shutter and sit on the edge of your seat, it’s going to be an amazing ride.

Day 6: Queenstown to Te Anau, 175km (2 hrs)

An easy, breezy and beautiful drive awaits you this afternoon, as Queenstown disappears and Te Anau manifests in all its scenic glory, beginning with picturesque views of Lake Wakatipu and the rugged ranges of The Remarkables. You’ll be treated to tourist stops aplenty, as the South Island’s interior lends itself to many quiet places to enjoy a pre-packed snack, before reaching the Murchison Mountains and Te Anau not long after.
Stay: Distinction Te Anau Hotel & Villas

Day 7: Te Anau to Aoraki Mount Cook, 429km (6 hrs 10 mins)

Leaving Fiordland, drive across the Waimea Plains, passing the farming community of Gore. Drive through the rolling hill country of Southland and South Otago before stopping for lunch in Dunedin, the 'Edinburgh of the South'. Head north to Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, home of the awe-inspiring Aoraki Mount Cook which stands at an imposing 3,754m, dominating the Southern Alps. Be sure to stop at Moeraki Beach with its mysterious, spherical, 60-million-year-old boulders.
Stay: Hermitage Mount Cook (incl breakfast)

Day 8: Aoraki Mount Cook to Christchurch, 322km (4 hrs 45 mins)

After a relaxing morning, leave New Zealand’s highest mountain behind today as you head north through the picturesque town of Geraldine, and across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch. Be sure you make a photo stop at Lake Tekapo, a beautiful turquoise-coloured lake. Visit the Church of the Good Shepherd on the shores of the lake. This is one of the most photographed churches in the world made of stone and sand from around the lake.
Stay: Rendezvous Christchurch (incl breakfast)

Day 9: Depart Christchurch

You have another opportunity to see or do things you missed during your first days in Christchurch, before returning your rental car to the airport depot with plenty of time to spare. Make sure you’re at your gate well before boarding, and enjoy a safe flight home.
